It is common for cats to go missing, and most of the time they may be resting in a warm corner of your house. If you have brought a new kitten into your home, you need to be alert about your furry pet’s hiding places.

In general, cats like to hide in warm spaces like the inside and back of furniture, and electric appliances. Check these places to find your pet cat. If they are not found there, try to lure them out with food. Additionally, if they are not found there, wait till it becomes dark.

Here are our 7 expert tricks to find a hidden cat inside your house. If your cat is hiding inside your house, these tricks will help find your kitten.

Why do Cats Hide?

Hiding is a common behavior for cats. If any space is wide enough to accommodate your cat’s whiskers, the cat may go there to check the place out. However, they find these places for several reasons.

Kittens are driven by their survival instincts to protect themselves from potential predators. Being inside a confined, tight space gives them a sense of security. Thus, you may often see cats trying to fit themselves in small paper boxes.

Additionally, cats are very fond of warmth. You may have noticed that when your pet cat is cuddling close to you, it finds the warmest space to rest. Sometimes, your cat may go to a confined space to find warmth and fall asleep. This is often the reason you do not see your cat for hours.

Moreover, felines have a keen sense of their surroundings and are often seen intensely observing everything. This can be overwhelming for them, especially because of the varying sounds and sights. Hiding in a quiet place helps them rest from too many stimuli.

Cats’ hunting instinct is another reason for them to hide around your house. They are always on the lookout for a vantage point from where they can see their prey and jump on them unexpectedly. Therefore, it is hard to predict where your cat has hidden itself.

How to Find Your Cat in Your House?

My cat once stayed inside my closet for a whole day. It only started meowing once it was hungry enough to leave the warmth of my coat. However, not every corner of my house is safe for my cat, so is your house.

Therefore, it is crucial to start locating your pet once it is nowhere in sight for hours. Trust your instincts, if you are starting to worry about your cat’s well-being, it is time to start looking for it.

A systematic search of your house is more effective than looking here and there overwhelmingly. Check all the hiding places thoroughly, especially the places where your cat may find warmth.

Here are the tricks I personally use to find my pet cat:

1. Look Under and Inside the Furniture

It is common for cats to get trapped somewhere inside or behind your furniture. In such cases, you will need to rescue them from there.

Check spaces under beds, couches, tables, recliners, and convertible sofas. Your cats can even hide inside box springs or behind books on bookshelves. Closets, drawers, and cabinets are also favorite places for cats to hide and they can get trapped there.

So, carefully open these and check if your cat climbed inside them.

2. Search Electronic Appliances and Machines

Electronic appliances are quite attractive to felines as they often stay warm. That’s why you may see your cat sitting on your laptop when you are working. So, if your cat disappears for a while, start checking your electrical appliances before turning them on.

Your cat can get electrocuted if you turn on the machines while they are inside. Check the back of the refrigerator and see if your cat is snuggled up in the empty space. Also, inspect behind the washer and the dryer, as well as the laundry baskets.

Make sure your cat is not inside the dishwasher, behind the TV, and other electronic devices in your home.

3. Check Behind Drywalls and Your HVAC Systems

There’s definitely a possibility that your missing kitten found its way inside a small hole in your drywall or gone through an open duct in your HVAC system. How do you find your missing cat in such cases?

Tap into walls and listen for soft meowing sounds. Do this for your entire home structure. If you do hear your cat and he seems trapped within the walls, narrow down his location and carefully cut a hole in the drywall to get him out.

If your cat doesn’t turn up, check your garage, attic, basement, crawl spaces, and rafters. Inspect for any open pipes in the kitchen and bathrooms through which your cat may have climbed.

4. Use Flashlight

Using a flashlight can come in very handy in finding your lost cat in dark spaces. Shine a flashlight into dark spaces to see if your cat is there or not.

The cat’s eyes reflect the light of the flashlight. It is often hard to find darker-colored cats in the dark, but their eyes always shine in the presence of light. You can also use a flashlight to look under and behind furniture for better visibility.

5. Lure Your Cat with Treats and Toys

If your cat is lost inside the house, you can use treats and toys to lure it. Shake a bag of treats or prepare some strong-smelling cat food that your cat loves. A can of tuna or freshly cooked chicken pieces will be enough to lure any cat out of hiding.

Kittens often resist a bowl of cat food mixed with kitten formula. Heat up the food so the smell makes its way to every corner of the house and draw your hungry kitty out.

6. Create a Safe Environment for Your Kitty

Cats like to take a nap all the time. This may be one of the core reasons why it hasn’t heard you when you called it out. If this is the case, wait till it becomes dark. You can turn off the light switches and close the blinds to make your home’s environment comfortable for the kitty.

Ensure your house is quiet and free from loud noises that might scare your cat further. Provide a cozy and safe spot with its favorite blanket or bed to encourage them to come out.

7. Use Scent and Check Even the Unusual Places

Place items with your scent around the house. It can be something like worn-in clothing, and place them around potential hiding spots. Any other objects with their familiar scents like bedding or toys can also come in very handy in this manner.

Check high places like shelves or the top of cabinets to see if your cat is napping there. If you have any abandoned boxes, also check there as cats love to sleep inside boxes. Call out your cat’s name and listen for responses.

If your cat is trapped somewhere in your home, sooner or later, it will call for help.

Final Words

These are 7 very effective tips that work in finding your lost cat if they are missing inside your home. Conduct your search calmly, patiently, and systematically. Start in one room and thoroughly check all the potential hiding spots before moving into another.

Your beloved kitten may be hiding out for fear and your search efforts may frighten it further. After an hour or so, if it still doesn’t appear, expand your search to cover the neighborhood. If your cat habitually goes into hiding for no reason, you may be dealing with cat anxiety.

If you see any signs of anxiety in your cat, immediately take it to your nearby vet. If you are sure your cat is nowhere inside your house, you can use platforms like PawMaw to report your lost cat and ask for help from nearby communities.
